Cable TV may soon be a thing of the past.  Today there are a  wealth of must-watch shows.  Across all the major networks and beyond, there’s more than enough to choose from. We have everything from angels to zombies, and everything in between.   Netflix though managed to join the ranks, and has come out the with its own host of wildly popular shows that have taken over  the streaming  business. Other streaming services like Hulu and Amazon  have followed  in the path of Netflix, but there’s no denying  this is the age of  Netflix.

1.  Netflix Originals

Netflix matches(and sometimes exceeds) other networks quality.  Series like Bloodline, Orange is the New Black, The Ranch and more have set the tone for quality. Each Netflix Original can be measured against any the networks have to offer.

2.  No ratings

For the most part, the major networks are still held  to the standards of the Nielsen rating system. Nielsen literally just send a box to selected households representing key demographics, and track the networks and times that household tunes in to regularly. This rating system has become more and more undependable, with many shows receiving low ratings but still having millions of viewers.  Netflix does not participate with this rating system.

3. No prime time competition

Major networks have been battling for the top spot since the beginning of television. Throughout this struggle, their main arena has been primetime, taking place between 8 and 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. During those hours, they air their strongest shows, then pray that their show is the most-watched on any single night throughout the week.  Netflix does not have this struggle, as a streaming service with a flexible schedule to release full season at a time, there is no competition.

4.  Binge-watching

For the last fifty years of television Americans have viewed programming as one episode a week. With the idea of building tension, while stretching out the potential for ad revenue.  Netflix has little time for ads, and went in the opposite direction. For all of the programming, subscribers can watch an entire season’s worth of episodes in a single day.  This allows viewers to watch at their own convenience, with many choosing to plow through every episode in a single sitting. This feeds the millennial generations need for instant gratification. Waiting one week for a program that last 40 minutes riddled with commercials , Netflix has become the clear choice. 5.  Low Cost

The cost of Netflix compared to cable is a no brainer.    With cost ranging from 9-12 dollars a month and cable almost quadrupling that it just makes sense.
