Is there anything better than kicking back and enjoying a Netflix marathon? After a long week, a good comedy movie can be the perfect remedy. Netflix has a large array of comedy movies to choose from, but we have compiled the best comedy movies and shows on Netflix to help narrow the search.

Grab your popcorn, turn on Netflix, and enjoy one (or all) of these hilarious films & shows.

What is a Comedy Movie?

Comedy movies are created with an intention to make the viewers laugh. Typically, they are light-hearted films that have a happy ending (except for black comedies). These movies use exaggeration on characters, language, etc. for a humorous effect.

There are a few different subgenres of comedy movies including slapstick, a fish out of water, and parodies to name the top few. Black comedies are unlike the other subgenres in that they have a dark or sadistic spin.

An example of a specific comedy movie genre could be Rom-Coms (romantic comedies).

Slapstick Comedy Movies

A slapstick comedy heavily relies on physical humor and does not require sound. Slapstick comedy movies were one of the first genres as there was no sound in films when they originated. These movies often include physical violence to get a laugh.

Fish Out of Water Comedy Movies

In a fish out of water comedy movie, you start off by seeing the character comfortable in their normal environment. At some point during the film, the character will be put in an unexpected, usually extremely different environment to drive humor.

Parody Comedy Movies

Parody movies, also known as spoof films, are made funny by mocking other movie genres. These comedy movies take well-known scenes from a variety of films and string them together for comedic effect.

Characteristics of an Amazing Comedy Movie

While there are different types of comedy movie subgenres that have their own standards, there are still vital characteristics that make a comedy amazing. It is no surprise that a great comedy movie must contain at least one main character who is a comedian. Comedians in movies keep the laughs coming with their witty one-liners or banter with another character.

An amazing comedy movie also has great timing. Timing is everything when it comes to comedy, and when a joke is placed at the right time, it makes it that much funnier.

Everyone loves a comedy. And Netflix has some amazing ones. From classic laughs to newly minted giggles. There is milk-shooting-out-your-nose silliness and thoughtful films that will also give you pause.

From the sarcastic to the sweet, whatever your taste, Netflix has a laugh for you. Here are our favorite comedies on Netflix right now.

Remember the ’80s? Probably not. But even without the internet and the ever-present phone, people still found plenty to laugh about. Some of the best comedies on Netflix come from the era of VHS and hair bands. Give them a try.

1. Caddyshack (1980)

Caddyshack (1980) Official Trailer - Chevy Chase Movie

A certain subset of Saturday Night Live graduates — Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Chevy Chase — ruled comedy in the 1980s. And Caddyshack was one of the films that kicked off their reign. And now it’s coming to Netflix.

Writers dedicated this film to Douglas Kenney, one of the creators of National Lampoon, whose life is chronicled in Netflix’s A Futile and Stupid Gesture, which also made this list. (Kenney died shortly after it was made.)

Caddyshack concerns the trials and tribulations of employees at a luxury golf course, as they battle obnoxious guests, each other, and a pesky gopher. It’s a classic for a reason. It’s also rated R.

2. Trading Places (1983)

Trading Places - Official Trailer 1983

A pair of Wall Street high rollers make a bet. If a Harvard educated stockbroker suddenly loses his job, his home, and all his money, will his genetic superiority carry him back to the top where he belongs?

Likewise, if you scrape a homeless, uneducated member of the criminal class off the streets of New York, put him in a suit, and give him a job, will he succeed or fail? If the two unwitting participants in the experiment are Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy, you can expect them to turn the tables on the high rollers in a series of hilarious exploits.

In an era where many of us are feeling tossed by the economic storm, this biting, but silly comedy might be just the remedy we need. Rated R.

3. Ghostbusters (1984)

Ghostbusters (1984) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers

The ’80s loved Dan Ackroyd, and so do we. In this inescapably silly film, four ghost hunters save New York City from ghosts, ectoplasmic entities, and the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson also give standout performances as ghost hunters who, for various reasons, don’t actually believe in ghosts.

Until they meet them on the streets of New York City. Rated PG.

4. She’s Gotta Have It (1986)

1986 She's Gotta Have It Official Trailer 1 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks

Spike Lee’s small budget ($175,000!) debut film turned out to be one of the most important films of the 1980s. In addition, it led a wave of independent films like we haven’t seen since. Beautiful Nola can’t decide which, of three men to date — the rich, arrogant model, the overprotective alpha male, or the endearing geek.

They all want her to themselves, but Nola wants her freedom.

Even 30 years later, the double standard for men’s and women’s sexual freedom is relevant. And the film is still darn funny. If you like it, Lee turned adapted it into a Netflix comedy special series in 2016.

Rated R.

5. Heathers (1989)

Heathers (1989) Trailer

This dark comedy — the screenplay won an Edgar award — has been called one of the best high school films ever made. Heathers concerns a clique of four “mean girls,” three of whom are named Heather. Social bullying and peer pressure turn to murder.

Or, rather, murders. Lots of them. And explosions.

It’s a smart, sharp-edged comedy. Possibly one of the best comedies on Netflix right now. But it is dark. And it’s rated R for a reason.

___________________________________________________

Some of the best funny movies on Netflix came from the 1990s. From heartwarming to inspiring to just plain fun. Here are some of the best comedies on Netflix from the 1990s.

6. The Commitments (1991)

THE COMMITMENTS - Trailer ( 1991 )

A working class Irish lad sets out to create “the World’s Hardest Working Band.” That band is the Commitments, a blue eyed soul group out of Dublin. The film chronicles the band’s ups and downs as they reach for the stars despite complications with family, work, and each other.

This is probably more of a dramedy than a straight comedy. But it has some solid laughs. And you can’t beat the music. Rated R, although the profanity is some of the best you’ll ever hear.

7. Cool Runnings (1993)

1993: Cool Runnings Trailer HQ

Like 2016’s Eddie the Eagle, this movie combines improbable athletes — a Jamaican bobsled team — with a down-and-out coach looking for redemption. Based on a true story, this underdog comedy delivers the giggles, as well as an excellent soundtrack.

Truly one of the best comedies on Netflix right now. Rated PG.

8. Men In Black (1997)

Men in Black (1997) Official Trailer 1 - Will Smith Movie

It’s hard to go wrong when you set wisecracking Will Smith up against poker faced Tommy Lee Jones. And it gets even funnier when you realize that Will Smith is the straight-laced cop who doesn’t believe in aliens. Jones, on the other hand, witnesses daily intergalactic shenanigans with a world-weary sigh.

And then they have to save the world. Another one of the best comedies on Netflix. Rated PG-13.

9. American Pie (1999)

American Pie Official Trailer #1 - (1999) HD

Who doesn’t love a good teenage sex romp? All right, a lot of people. But this is a good teenage sex romp with heart. And soul. And Eugene Levy as probably the funniest, most adorkable movie Dad in history.

Four friends on the verge of graduation make the ultimate pact: to lose their virginity by Prom Night.

Will they succeed? We’re not saying. But if they do, they will fail hilariously, and often, first.

Rated R. FYI, the sequels are well worth a watch as well.

___________________________________________________

The first decade of the new millennium brought some standout comedies. Whether you like sharp and biting, sweet and romantic, or just plain silly. And some of these are among the best comedies on netflix right now.

Have a look.

10. Meet the Parents (2000)

Meet the Parents Official Trailer #1 - Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro Comedy (2000) HD

Male Nurse Gaylord Focker (*snerk*) wants to propose to his girlfriend Pam, when she takes him home one weekend to meet her parents. Unfortunately, Pam’s dad, a retired CIA agent, likes Pam’s a-little-too-perfect ex-boyfriend better.

And the more Greg tries to improve things, the worse things actually get. Disasters pile on disasters, until…well, just watch it. You’ll love it.

Rated PG-13.

11. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY (2001) | Official Trailer | 4K Restoration

This is possibly one of the best romantic comedies on Netflix you’ll see this month. Renee Zellweger stars in the titular role. Thirty-two-year-old Bridget has a career and a friends-with-benefits relationship with her roguish boss. But she wants more.

Her mother keeps trying to fix her up with a stuffy older man who seems to hate her. And everything Bridget touches seems to go hilariously wrong. It’s a lovely lightweight romantic comedy.

Rated R.

12. Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

Wet Hot American Summer Trailer

Yes, this is just what it sounds like: a slapstick, 1980s style sex romp set in a summer camp. But it’s the film’s dark, nihilistic undercurrent that made it stand out, and ensured its cult following.

Indeed, Netflix itself produced an eight-episode prequel series that is also well worth checking out.

13. 13 Going on 30 (2004)

13 Going on 30 (2004) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers

Some have criticized this overlooked gem as being a ripoff of Tom Hanks’s Big. But it might actually be — sacrilege! — just as good. With the help of some magic wishing dust, 13-year-old geek Jenna grows to a glamorous 30 overnight.

She has everything she ever wanted, except for her best friend. How can she get back to the true love she left behind? Charming, fresh, and open-hearted.

Rated PG-13.

14. Hot Fuzz (2007)

Hot Fuzz Official Trailer #1 - (2007) HD

Hot Fuzz is the second film in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavors Coronetto trilogy, which includes Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End. You don’t need to see the other films to enjoy it — each of the three stands on its own.

This one is a detective story. Of sorts. Police Constable Nicholas Angel, a high-achieving officer of the Metropolitan Police Service, is transferred to the idyllic, crime-free village of Sanford.

When two actors die just after a local play, the town writes it off as an accident. But Angel knows it’s murder.

More murders ensue. Then some mayhem. Then more murders. And you’ll never guess the twist. This is easily one of the best Netflix comedy movies coming in March.

Rated R.

15. Burn After Reading (2008)

Burn After Reading Official Trailer #1 - Brad Pitt Movie (2008) HD

The Cohen brothers have a distinctive storytelling style. Like Wes Anderson and David Lynch, the Cohen brothers enjoy the using some of the same actors, giving their sets a specific mood and look, and employing distinctive music.

Here’s the setup. A disk filled with CIA secrets falls into the hands of two dimwitted gym employees. Naturally, their thoughts turn to blackmail. Their ineptitude leads to a series of unfortunate but hilarious events. And oh, yes, Brad Pitt.

Rated R.

Where is comedy headed? If these Netflix comedy movies are any indication, the future will be smart, diverse and funny.

16. Little Evil (2017)

Little Evil | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

In this Netflix Original film, a recently married man begins to suspect that his new stepson is actually a demon. And he may be right. This horror comedy pays tribute to all of your favorite horror movie tropes. Plus Adam Scott (that’s Mayor Ben Wyatt to you and me) is hilarious as the stepdad desperately trying to connect with what might be actual demon spawn.

The end is surprisingly… um… Well, we’ll just let you decide for yourself.

17. A Futile and Stupid Gesture (2017)

A Futile and Stupid Gesture | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

This is another Netflix original, and it’s based on a true story. A Futile and Stupid Gesture is a biopic that concerns the life of the late Doug Kenney. Kenney, in case you didn’t know, was the founder of National Lampoon. National Lampoon began as a humorous magazine.

It went on to spawn theatre pieces, film, radio, and books.

The National Lampoon brand of satire, parody, and surrealism would go on to have a profound effect on American comedy. And Kenney’s colorful life, combined with the story of the magazine that changed American comedy forever makes for compelling viewing.

18. The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

The Incredible Jessica James | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

This is another Netflix Original, and probably one of the best Netflix romantic comedies. Here’s the setup. Jessica James, a struggling playwright in New York City, has been burned by a bad breakup. A friend sets her up with a blind date, which gets off to a bad start.

We won’t reveal how it ends, but the two characters’ journey to — and away from — each other makes for a great show.

19. Documentary Now!

Documentary Now! | Official Trailer (ft. Fred Armisen & Bill Hader) | IFC

How can you go wrong, with a mockumentary created by Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers, Bill Heder and Rhys Thomas? Documentary Now! is the name of a long-running news show featuring documentaries about fictitious subjects.

Helen Mirren appears at the beginning of each episode to introduce the spoofed documentary. Hilarious.

20. One Day at a Time

ONE DAY AT A TIME Official Trailer (HD) Netflix Comedy Series

This is a reboot of the classic 1970s show by the same name. There are a few things keeping this update from being just another second-rate reboot, though. First, Norman Lear produced it — just as he produced the original.

In addition, the single mother headed family is now Cuban American (the original family was white). At the same time, the update, like the original, tackles the social issues of the day with warmth and humor.

The series has been getting great reviews, and it deserves it. If you haven’t started watching this awesome show, you are seriously missing out.

21. The League

The League Power Hour

It doesn’t matter if you’re not into sports. This show is hilarious. It’s like Friends, with fantasy football. The show is partly scripted, so it has a great energy that you just can’t get from a fully scripted show.

If you like banter and smack-talking, you’ll like this one.

22. The Guild

A different kind of gaming, a different group of friends. This series follows the adventures and antics of a group of online gamers. The Guild began as a viewer-supported web series on YouTube. Seasons 2 through 5 were sponsored by Xbox. Season 6, the final season, finished out on YouTube in 2012.

The Guild has won numerous awards over the years, from SXSW, YouTube, Yahoo, and others. And now you can stream it on Netflix.

23. Mystery Science Theatre 3000

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Official Trailer (HD) Patton Oswalt Comedy Series

Now on Netflix, you can stream both the original series, and Netflix’s own update. Watch classically bad science fiction movies, and laugh along with the MST3K hosts as they mock them.

Good, clean fun, and one of the best comedy shows on Netflix right now.

24. Archer

Archer | Season 11: Official Trailer [HD] | FXX

FX’s animated series parodies both James Bond and Mad Men with ruthlessness and finesse. The show follows the exploits of a dysfunctional group of secret agents. Hijinks — or rather spyjinks — ensue in this very adult animated comedy series.

25. Master of None

Master of None - Season 2 | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Aziz Ansari, of Parks and Rec fame, debuted his own show in 2015, and it’s easily one of the best comedies on Netflix right now. Ansari plays Dev Shah, a young man trying to navigate his career, romantic life, and being a person of color in New York City.

Based heavily on the background and interest of its two creators, Master of None follows the daily life and struggles of Dev (Aziz Ansari). Being a struggling actor in his early 30s and living in New York, Dev deals with the same problems we all do: modern dating, love, friendship, and food.

Its angle, and empathy for the underrepresented, are what elevate the show from its generic set-up. Being Indian-American himself, Ansari and his partner Alan Young explore topics of immigration and identity.

Received with critical acclaim, the show is immensely funny and charming and won awards for the quality of its writing.

26. Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation: The Complete Series - Trailer - Own it on Blu-ray 1/6

And speaking of Parks and Rec, it’s coming, too! Following on the success of The Office (which is also coming to Netflix in March), this documentary-style comedy takes place in the Parks and Recreation department of the fictional town of Pawnee, IN.

Filled with oddball characters that are mismatched to the job, and to each other, Parks and Recreation is quirky perfection.

27. Clerks (1994)

Clerks Official Trailer #1 - (1994) HD

A cult classic, Clerks, follows a convenience store clerk, Dante, who is called in on his day off and ends up enduring a shift from hell. Dante and his co-worker, Randal, do their best to avoid having to actually do any work.

The two clerks find themselves in a slew of predicaments including attempted robberies and a dead girlfriend. This low-budget, black-and-white film is sure to keep you entertained.

28. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Official Trailer #1 - Jason Segel, Mila Kunis Movie (2008) HD

This romantic comedy has an incredible cast lined up to create this hilarious film. After a terrible break-up, Peter, played by Jason Segel, takes a vacation to Hawaii to take his mind off his movie-star ex, Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell.

Much to his surprise, Sarah happened to be staying in the same hotel with her new rock star boyfriend, Aldous, played by Russell Brand.

The sadness hits again and has Peter crying alone in his hotel room until he began spending time with Rachel, played by Mila Kunis, the hotel clerk. Between the awkward, naked break-up, a Dracula musical, and sex-fuelled Russell Brand, this movie is unlike anything you have seen before.

29. Happy Gilmore (1996)

Happy Gilmore Official Trailer #1 - Christopher McDonald Movie (1996) HD

While Netflix has a few Adam Sandler movie options, Happy Gilmore was our top pick. Happy, played by Adam Sandler, spent his life dreaming of becoming a pro hockey player but faced one problem, he isn’t great at hockey.

He finds that while his angry outbursts get him on trouble on the golf course; he is still a naturally skilled golfer.

To earn enough money to save his grandmother’s (Frances Bay) house, he joins the PGA Tour with the help of his new friend, Chubbs, played by Carl Weathers. The only problem is that he runs into Shooter McGavin who is threatened by Happy and actively tries to get him kicked off the pro tour.

You can expect to see Sandler’s typical juvenile humor, a hilarious cast, and even a fist fight between Happy and Bob Barker.

30. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) Official Trailer

As the movie title states, Andy, played by Steve Carell, is a nerdy character, 40 years old, and still remains a virgin. He lets his secret slip out while playing poker with his buddies. While Andy’s friends try to help him find a woman, he can have for the night, Andy is a soft and caring character who would rather find the right person.

While it seems like this movie would be a movie about sex, it actually has a romantic spin on it. Not only will you laugh at all of Andy’s misfortunes, like getting his chest hair painfully waxed off, but you will find yourself feeling sympathetic for him rather than sorry for him.

___________________________________________________

The most direct and essential form of comedy, stand-up comedians are hilarious, but deceptively tough as well. Resilient beyond belief, with personal issues beyond repair, they made it through the grueling process of bombing on stage over and over.

And bless them for it. From legends to relative unknowns, there is something to explore and enjoy for everyone.

31. Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

The larger-than-life story of comedian Dave Chappelle is hard to fathom. Turning down a multi-million dollar deal for his influential sketch show, Chappelle’s Show, he moved to a remote farm in Ohio. And if that did not make enough headlines back then, he practically vanished from showbusiness.

But his story was not over yet.

Quietly performing the comedy circle, showing up to do sets at random, he worked himself towards a comeback. In 2017 it was finally time for him to show his face on screen again. He followed up his award-nominated appearance on Saturday Night Live, with four different stand-up specials on Netflix.

Being possibly the best working comic of his generation, Dave Chappelle shows the heights and layers stand-up comedy can take. Fiercely himself, it is hard not to be impressed by this man’s comedy chops.

32. Seth Rogan: Hilarity for Charity

Seth Rogen's Hilarity for Charity | Comedy Special Official Trailer | Netflix

Seth Rogan has become a household name. He is one of the most recognizable faces working in comedy today. The only thing more noteworthy than his face is his laughter. Rogan is, however, mostly known for his work as a comedic actor in movies like Knocked Up.

Stand-up has not been his arena up til now. What many might not know is that, besides his work in the entertainment industry, he is active in Alzheimer’s charity work. So to raise money for a cause near and dear to his heart, he struck a deal with Netflix.

The result is a variety show featuring stand-up performances, live music, and appearances from Sarah Silverman to the Muppets. It is funny, and for a good cause.

33. The Standups

The Standups | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

The world of stand-up comedy is a hard place. It’s rough on people trying to make it, barely any of them actually make a living from it. Sure, we all know some famous comedians, but what about all the newcomers out there trying to make it?

If you are interested in these fresh new voices, Netflix has the show for you. The Standups takes Los Angeles’ best and brightest funny people and puts them in the spotlight. With two seasons, each containing six half-hour specials from your new favorite comedian, The Standups provides entertainment that puts you ahead of the curve.

34. The Honeymoon Stand-Up Special

Natasha Leggero & Moshe Kasher: The Honeymoon Standup Special | Official Trailer | Netflix

Created by, and starring married comedians Natasha Leggero and Moshe Kasher, The Honeymoon Stand-Up Special is a hilarious exploration of love and marriage. The three-part special consists of half-hour sets by both Leggero and Kasher, as well as improvised banter only a couple dedicated to marriage can do.

It’s the definite highlight of the program. After the performances finish, the hosts pull unwitting couples up on stage for a “Couples Roast.” Testing their audience’s love, Leggero and Kasher might make them uncomfortable, but our stomachs hurt from laughter.

35. Chris Rock: Tamborine

Chris Rock: Tamborine - Stand-Up Special | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Before he became one of the biggest names in comedy, Chris Rock was just another no-name trying to make it on stage. A lot has happened since those days. Having starred in movies like the Madagascar series, Grown-Ups, Top Five, and hosting the Oscars, Chris Rock has arrived.

Still, when stand-up came calling again, and he answered. So 10 years after his last special, Netflix got Rock back on stage. Grown older, but no less funny, Tamborine proves that you can still have a comeback even if you never left.

Chris Rock sheds the veil of stardom in a profoundly personal hour of entertainment.

Ever since The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the late-night talk show has been a staple of television. Providing funny anecdotes from celebrity guests, giving comedians a platform to perform in front of millions of people, all while producing a comedy show running five days a week.

These days there are multiple late-night shows to choose from, so naturally, Netflix is not willing to get beaten on the talk show front.

36. My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman | Season 3 Official Trailer | Netflix

Despite the legacy Carson left behind, David Letterman was the king of late-night comedy for millions. His 22 year run at the Late Show racked up an unbelievable 4263 episodes. And when in 2015 Stephen Colbert took over the Late Show, his retirement seemed complete.

But Netflix had different plans.

Titled after one of his catchphrases, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman brought Letterman to the streaming services. Each episode features a one-hour long-form conversation with a famous guest.

Not only are they more personal than the traditional late-night format, but also still as funny as always.

37. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Formerly part of Sony’s Crackle streaming service, Netflix was able to snatch up Jerry Seinfeld and his singular talk show. The title pretty much says it all.

Being a fanatic about both cars and coffee, legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld invites another comedian to take a ride with him and have a coffee. But what makes the show such an enjoyable watch, besides its original approach to the talk show format, is Jerry Seinfeld himself.

Seinfeld is, for lack of a better term, an eccentric guy. He does not care all that much about his guests it seems, sometimes he clicks with them, and sometimes he does not.

The results are awkward, hilarious and raw. It is all edge, zero polish, and tons of fun.

38. A Little Help with Carol Burnett

A LITTLE HELP WITH CAROL BURNETT Official Series Announcement Trailer (HD) Netflix Series

Life is hard. Nothing is worse than when a problem gets you down, and instead of solving it, you are stuck in your head. You begin to think circles around a solution, and spiral into depths of overcomplication. What if there was a way to keep it simple?

Actress Carol Burnett has the answer.

Celebrity guests come to her with personal problems, and with the help of a group of kids, they brainstorm fixes. Sometimes they work, sometimes they are just plain silly. In other words, they’re kids, so what did you expect?

39. The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

Joel McHale Show | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Actor/comedian Joel McHale has opinions, he also brought all 12 seasons of his show, The Soup to Netflix. With popular culture and television seemingly reaching new heights of absurdity every day, one man says what we are all thinking.

The Soup has now become the Joel McHale show.

The name might be different, but the format stayed the same. Hosted by Joel Mchale, The Joel McHale Show provides satirical and sarcastic commentary on clips covering everything the world of entertainment has to offer. Unlike most Netflix shows, The Joel McHale Show is released weekly to ensure maximum relevance.

40. Chelsea

Chelsea | A Netflix Talk Show [HD] | Netflix

Netflix’s first foray into the late-night market is headlined by comedian Chelsea Handler. Unlike many of its late-show competitors, Chelsea took a decidedly more global approach, thanks to the streaming service’s audience watching worldwide.

While it had its following, the show was canceled after two seasons but remains an immensely exciting exploration of what a comedic talk-show can be. Its global approach, coupled with it not being shackled to a late-night timeslot, makes it fascinating to compare in a busy market.

___________________________________________________

The supreme discipline of the comedy genre. Ever since television has existed, TV comedy had its place in the primetime. Sitcoms, sketch-shows, animated cartoons and everything in between.

Every generation had its favorites to tune in weekly. And with Netflix being the king of streaming shows, it is no wonder that subscribers can choose from a large range of options.

41. Bojack Horseman

BoJack Horseman | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Surprising deep, especially in light of its simplistic cartoon style, Bojack Horseman is more than meets the eye. Back in the 90s, Bojack Horseman (Will Arnett) starred in a very famous TV show. Now, the washed-up actor doesn’t have much to show for it. No friends and no family, the only thing he hates more than other people is himself.

Only when a ghostwriter (Allison Brie) comes into his life to help him write his memoirs does Horseman begin to question his life decisions. This animated show filled with talking animals is not only a hilarious parody of Hollywood and the film industry but also a heartbreaking drama.

No show on television portrays mental illness, depression and the damage we cause to others better — or more hilariously — than this show starring a talking horse.

42. American Vandal

American Vandal | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Netflix is the home of the best true crime out there. On the heel of the genre’s success came, out of nowhere, American Vandal. The pitch-perfect parody revolves around the central mystery of who sprayed the dicks on the teacher’s car.

Everyone believes it was local idiot Dylan Maxwell (Jimmy Tatro), but two junior filmmakers have their doubts. Noticing that the drawing’s do not line up with Dylan’s usual style for drawing dicks, they begin to investigate.

What follows is a six-episode investigation that is both funny true-crime homage, but also a genuinely suspenseful mystery-drama.

43. Arrested Development

Arrested Development - Season 4 | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

One of the most cult-y of cult sitcoms, Arrested Development is a prime example of Netflix reviving unwanted shows. It revolves around the wealthy yet dysfunctional Bluth family dealing with bankruptcy. Only their second-eldest son, Michael (Jason Bateman), can keep his relatives from falling apart—all the while trying to save his young son George-Michael (Michael Cera) from turning into a Bluth himself.

Never a mainstream success during its initial television run, Netflix renewed the show for a fourth season back in 2013. It remains to be seen what the Bluth family is up to 15 years after their inception.

44. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Trailer

From the mind of 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is an exercise of excellence from one of TV comedy’s most brilliant writers. After being rescued from the underground bunker of a doomsday cult, the now 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) has to learn to live in the real world.

Having spent 15 years thinking the apocalypse has happened, Kimmy moves to New York to start a new life. Unbelievably naive, yet possessing an unbreakable positivity, Kimmy learns what it means to be an adult.

One job, crazy neighbor and boy at a time.

With too many great and influential comedies to count over the decades, Netflix finds itself in fierce competition. Yet, the streaming services produces and co-produces a steady flow of belly-achingly funny blockbusters.

45. Kodachrome

Kodachrome | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

Comedy and tragedy are only separated by a thin line. In Greek theatre tradition the difference was just the number of people in the choir. Halfway between comedy and tragedy, the “tramedy” has been a staple of Hollywood.

Who doesn’t like their dramas sprinkled with a bit of humor? Inspired by a true story, a father and son take a road trip to the last lab in the world still developing photo film in the Kodachrome method.

The two have been estranged for years, but as news comes in that the father is dying, the two try to fix their relationship by reaching the lab before it closes its doors for good.

46. The Week Of

The Week Of Trailer #1 (2018) | Movieclips Trailers

Adam Sandler has been a controversial figure in film. Continually swinging back and forth between movies scoffed at by critics, and acclaimed roles in movies like Punch Drunk Love, it is hard to pin the man down. What is undeniable though, outside the lofty heights of the critics, his comedies are still top-rated.

The Week Of is only the latest collaboration between Sandler and Netflix, which already netted us three other comedies. Co-starring Chris Rock, the movie tells the story of two dads who children are getting married to each other.

With conflicting views on how the wedding should take place, the two have to learn to work together against each other.

Based on the book The Operators, War Machine is a movie about the work of four-star general Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt). Renowned for his leadership during the Iraq War, he is sent to Afghanistan to assess the situation on the ground.

He leads a massive rebuild of the US operations in the war-torn nation despite being confronted with opposition from enemies, allies and bureaucrats alike. His methods to achieve this, and his demeanor in general, however, is not what anyone expected.

War Machine is a satire about the absurdity of war, government bureaucracy, and what it means to be an American today.

48. David Brent: Life on the Road

David Brent: Life on the Road | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix

The Office was a cultural landmark. Both the British original and the American remake have been huge successes in their own right. Where the American version went on for nine seasons, the British one lasted only two.

This leaves a lot of room to explore the continuing life of the loveably despicable office manager David Brent. Trying to fill these expectations, Ricky Gervais slipped back into the shoes of his most famous creation.

Now far away from the confines of a paper company, Brent travels up and down the country to finally live out his rock star dreams. One awkward interaction at a time.

Written by and starring infamous alternative comedian Julian Barratt of Mighty Boosh fame, Mindhorn is one weird little movie. Initially a British film, it was picked up by Netflix for international distribution.

Best known for his 80s television show Mindhorn, actor Richard Thorncraft (Barratt) spend the next 25 years ruining his career and basking in his ego. But when a lunatic wanted for murder escapes an insane asylum, the police require Thorncraft’s help.

Believing Mindhorn is real, the escapee refuses to speak to anyone but him. So, with the almost three decades showing on his belly and in his gray hair, Thorncraft has to resume his most famous role — this time for real.
