Although this Netflix Original series has two seasons now under its belt, you may not have heard of The Rain. Or maybe you haven’t watched it because it’s Scandinavian and the main language is Dutch, dubbed over with English.

But don’t let that stop you. If you can get past the mouths not matching the words, you’re in for an interesting story.

This sci-fi thriller has your typical elements of the apocalypse. A sickness has descended on the Earth and wiped out most of civilization — at least that’s what you assume. The source of the catastrophe, in this case, is the rain.

Now, think about that for a second and what kind of impact that would have on the world. Sure, you can go inside when it rains, but the trees and bodies of water can’t. The ground has nowhere to hide either, and what about the puddles the rain leaves behind? And we haven’t even touched on the wildlife.

Once you wrap your mind around that, you know what the main characters Simone and Rasmus are going through.

Luckily for this brother-sister team, their dad set up a series of underground bunkers for just this situation. He even designed one especially for them. But, wait, how did he know this was going to happen?

It would help for you to know that Simone and Rasmus’ dad is a scientist, so you can only imagine how he anticipated the rain.

They had to live underground, it’s true, but at least they had some refuge. The people caught out in the first storm and after weren’t so fortunate.

And if you’ve ever watched The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, or any other apocalyptic show, you know the disease or the thing that it turns people into are not the only things to worry about.

The people who remain seem to be worse than the disease itself.

The first season of The Rain came out in 2018 and season 2 just hit Netflix in May 2019, so now is the time to catch up.

Unfortunately, this season only gave us six episodes as opposed to eight in the first season, so that’s disappointing. But if this season is as successful as the last, maybe we’ll get more in season three.

Either way, The Rain is not only a story about what happens at the end of the world, but like other stories in the same genre, it’s not just about that. The big-picture story of The Rain is about loyalty, love, family, and trust.

And the solution to the rain that falls lies in the last place you would expect.

Even if you’re not a sci-fi fan, you can still enjoy The Rain because it has more elements than meet the eye at first blush. If you haven’t discovered The Rain, you should give it a try. Then come back here and tell us what you think of it in the comments!
