The 6 Best Broadway Musicals On Netflix

Broadway Musicals are a fun and exciting.  The genre “Musical” on Netflix doesn’t necessarily mean the titles were on the big stage, it does means there are some musical scores in the movies.  

The actual list on Netflix isn’t that long and it’s filled with Bollywood Musicals, Children’s Cartoons and Teen Movies.  So we took the time to research,  for fans of musicals which Broadway Musicals can be streamed on Netflix.

1. Rent

RENT (2005) – Official Trailer

Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson.   The story is about a group of poor young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City under the shadow of  HIV/AIDS.  On Broadway, Rent won a Tony Award for Best Musical among others.

The Broadway production closed in September  of 2008 after a 12-year run of 5,123 performances.

2. Grease

Grease is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, This musical is set in 1959 at a fictional Rydell High and follows ten middle class teenagers as they navigate peer pressure, politics, personal values, and love.  

It closed in 1980, with 3,388-performance and remains Broadway’s 15th longest-running show.

3. Shrek The Musical

Shrek The Musical  is based on the 2001 DreamWorks film Shrek.  The original Broadway production opened in December 2008, and closed after a run of over 12 months in January 2010.

4. Hello Dolly

Hello Dolly the musical, was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and produced by David Merrick.  It opened in January 1964 and closed in December 1970, after 2,844 performances.  

The show has become one of the fan favorites in musical theater hits.

5. Hairspray

Hairspray is an American musical based on the social commentary on the injustices of some of  American society in the 1960s.  The musical’s original Broadway production opened in August 2002 and ran for more than six years, closing in January of  2009 after 2,642 performances.

6. White Christmas

White Christmas played a limited engagement on Broadway which started in  November of 2008 running through January of  2009, for 53 performances.

Not all of these musicals are in their original Broadway form but we still think they are “FAAAAA-BUUUUU-LOOOO-USSSSS”!  Enjoy!
