Netflix’s Archie Horror franchise (Riverdale) spin-off, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is getting a fresh new revival courtesy of Netflix. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is coming to Netflix. But forget Sabrina and her two witchy aunts for a moment; the character many of us are looking forward to seeing is everyone’s favorite talking cat, Salem. He was a favorite character in the popular sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, starring 90’s teen icon Melissa Joan Hart.

Salem, the Most Beloved Sabrina Character

Thanks to Chief Creative Officer and writer Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, audiences have had the opportunity to meet the new Salem. We don’t yet know much about what Salem’s new story will be. Fans waxed a bit nostalgic for the old Salem, here:

For those of you not in the know, Salem is Sabrina’s cat, as well as her familiar –- because what would a witch be without a black cat, right? He has a pretty rich history in the original story. Salem was once a warlock named Samuel Saberhagen who messed with the wrong witches. They turned him into a cat for 100 years. Salem’s schtick in the 90’s iteration was his sarcastic humor and one-liners. Not to mention and his tendency to weep openly when he is upset. Salem is a bit of an anti-hero sidekick. Motivated by greed, a lust for fame, and his ultimate goal: one day getting his human form back and taking over the world. He is very loyal to Sabrina’s family, though.

Here is Salem, now:

Details are Scarce, but Enthusiasm is High

As yet, details about the show are not public. That is except to say that the Sabrina reboot version — much like its sister show Riverdale — promises to be modern, darker, and with more mature subject matter. As the Archie Horror name suggests, Sabrina will include fantasy elements of the occult and witchcraft.

“After I read the script, I became immediately obsessed with the role, with how Sabrina is portrayed and how badass the whole thing is,” the new Sabrina, actress Kiernan Shipka told ComicBook.com recently. “It’s going to be really dark and really cool, and have this very like macabre take on everything. I’m really pumped to be a witch. Who wouldn’t be?”

The new series doesn’t have its official title yet. And, we are all still waiting in suspense for a release date. But, according to Canadian website What’s Filming, Sabrina will be filming in Vancouver, Canada starting March 19 and ending December 5. Because of that, we can guess at a timeline for release sometime in 2019.
