Orange Is the New Black is a comedy-drama series is based on Piper Kerman‘s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. Orange Is the New Black is a Netflix Original and premiered on July 11, 2013. The series’ fourth season was released on June 17, 2016. In February 2016, the series was renewed for a fifth, sixth and seventh season.
Piper Chapman who is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary for an offense that occurred 10 years prior to the start of the series, and in that time, Piper had moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York’s upper class, so her unexpected indictment seriously effects her relationships with her fiancé, family, and friends. The show often refers to flashbacks of each character of events that led the their incarceration and to add to their backstory. Some inmates come for low and middles class while others come from wealth. Different social classes are depicted as well. The show also reveals some of the prison systems down falls and failures. Season 3 ends with an escape of all the prisoners, for example.
