Kiernan Shipka cast as Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Kiernan Shipka’s the new Sabrina, and she’s not your mom’s teenage witch…

If you grew up in the late 90s you may have watched the hit TV series, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Based on the Archie Comics character, Sabrina Spellman, this quirky, funny sitcom’s still remembered fondly by fans.

Now CW’s and Netflix’s Riverdale has beguiled the younger set with a darker take on the Archie Comics universe. So it’s only natural for fans to keep asking if Sabrina will get a reboot.

We recently learned the answer’s yes, and the new show’s based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This critically-acclaimed comic book series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa delves deep into horror and the occult… So don’t expect the light-and-frothy old Sabrina.

Here’s a video that talks about what to expect from the new show.

Who is Kiernan Shipka?

Since word of the reboot making the news, fans have been weighing in on their ideal pick for the role of Sabrina. Names of popular teen actresses like Sabrina Carpenter, Dove Cameron, Selena Gomez, and Anna Sophia Rob topped many fan’s lists. But many haven’t heard of Kiernan Shipka.

It’s telling that while Kiernan Shipka’s peers cut their teeth on Disney Channel fare, she portrayed young Sally Draper on Madmen, a TV drama for adults. Nor is she a stranger to gothic and horror themes. She played Cathy in Flowers in the Attic (2014) and The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015). The new Sabrina’s also appeared on ABC’s The B in Apt. 23 and voiced Jinnora for Nickelodeon’s more mature Avatar the Last Airbender sequel, Legend of Korra.

Here’s some more information about the casting process for the new Sabrina

Kiernan Shipka Was on the Executive Producer’s Wish List

According to executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who’s executive producer for the show, told Vanity Fair he’s a huge fan of Kiernan Shipka’s work. “When we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be,” he explained, “Her name was on everyone’s wishlist.” Aguirre Sacasa then adds:

“This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”

A few things will remain the same within the Netflix series; a boyfriend named Harvey, the aunts Hilda and Zelda, and Salem the talking cat. That’s where similarities stop. The show will take on tones similar to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, creepy and dark. According to Hollywood Reporter:

The untitled drama’s Sabrina Spellman is described as an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, who is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High.

Of course, since Sabrina also happens to be a teenager, we’ll still see some normal coming-of-age themes.

Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.

So now, fans are dying to know… What kind of trouble will Sabrina get into in the new series, and just how dark is it going to be?
