Jessica Jones is back, and it’s about time. The badass girl of Marvel is finally back for a second season, and Netflix just dropped the trailer with a triumphant boom.
Fans are delirious. Netflix renewed the show for a second season back in January 2016. After waiting two years for her return to Netflix, Jessica Jones fans are ready to rediscover why they love her so much. Watching the feminist super-icon in Marvel’s The Defenders was great and all. But fans want most to return to Jessica’s dark and riveting story.
And it looks like Season 2 is going to give them everything they asked for. The trailer hints that Season 2 is all about Jessica Jones’ origin story. Played by Krysten Ritter, Jones is a cynical and troubled former superhero, who now runs a detective agency in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen.
At the end of Season 1, Jones defeated her personal tormentor, the supervillain Kilgrave. But she was left shattered. The new trailer reveals that in Season 2, she’ll be delving into her own past. Instead of investigating cheap, back-alley cheaters for her clients, she’ll be investigating the accident that killed off her family and gave her mysterious superpowers.
Jones finally defeated Kilgrave, she’s been doing a lot of thinking — and a lot of drinking. She’ll be delving into the experiments that turned her into the mutant. An unnamed woman in the trailer may know what Jones is looking for, and then hints that Jones wasn’t the only one who was changed.
A stranger is trying to buy Alias Investigations from Jones, but she’s not biting. He seems to stomp on every hot button issue she has — there may be a betting pool on how long she lets him live.
The trailer ends on an ominous note, too. Who is that man bathed in purple light? Could it be Kilgrave, often called The Purple Man, back from the grave?
Last August, Entertainment released a photo of Krysten Ritter and David Tennant, who plays Kilgrave. The only information released was that it was a set photo from the second season saying that Tennant would appear in Season 2.
And we may even see Jones pick up a side kick. Trish Walker, Jones’ childhood friend and adopted sister, appears in the trailer, saying:
“Jessica might not want a sidekick, but she needs one.”
That’s just one of the ways the team behind Jessica Jones continues to stand up for the show’s core message: female autonomy and empowerment. The first season addressed some serious feminist issues like rape and gaslighting. And appropriately, every episode of the new season is directed by a woman.
While still in development, Jessica Jones screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg said:
“I love this character. That is an incredibly damaged, dark, complex female character that kicks ass. That’s my favorite thing about it.”
That’s exactly what Rosenberg delivered.
Besides, she pretty much owes the tribe after penning the Twilight screenplay.
Watch the trailer below and prepare to get really, really excited. Because the new season drops on March 8th.
