What is a Comedy Movie?

Comedy movies are created with an intention to make the viewers laugh. Typically, they are light-hearted films that have a happy ending (except for black comedies). These movies use exaggeration on characters, language, etc. for a humorous effect. There are a few different subgenres of comedy movies including slapstick, a fish out of water, and parodies to name the top few. Black comedies are unlike the other subgenres in that they have a dark or sadistic spin.

Slapstick Comedy Movies

A slapstick comedy heavily relies on physical humor and does not require sound. Slapstick comedy movies were one of the first genres as there was no sound in films when they originated. These movies often include physical violence to get a laugh.

Fish Out of Water Comedy Movies

In a fish out of water comedy movie, you start off by seeing the character comfortable in their normal environment. At some point during the film, the character will be put in an unexpected, usually extremely different environment to drive humor.

Parody Comedy Movies

Parody movies, also known as spoof films, are made funny by mocking other movie genres. These comedy movies take well-known scenes from a variety of films and string them together for comedic effect.

Characteristics of an Amazing Comedy Movie

While there are different types of comedy movie subgenres that have their own standards, there are still vital characteristics that make a comedy amazing. It is no surprise that a great comedy movie must contain at least one main character who is a comedian. Comedians in movies keep the laughs coming with their witty one-liners or banter with another character. An amazing comedy movie also has great timing. Timing is everything when it comes to comedy, and when a joke is placed at the right time, it makes it that much funnier.
