Superbowl LII had some good and bad commercials this year. But the one that surprised Netflix viewers was the trailer for Cloverfield Paradox. This is the third installment of the Cloverfield franchise. J.J. Abrams takes this a step further by putting the characters in space. If you missed the trailer for the third installment, we have it at the end of this article.

Let’s take a look at the beginnings of this title for everyone that needs a bit of a refresher.

Cloverfield, a look Back

For those who haven’t seen any of the Cloverfield movies, the original was about a group of New Yorkers (Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman) who go to a party. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a terrifying night they would not soon forget. If you remember the Blair Witch Project movies, it resembles something like this but with monsters from space. The characters use handheld recorders to document their struggle for survival a New York falls apart around them.

10 Cloverfield Lane, the Second Movie

10 Cloverfield Lane, the second installment, was more of a psychological thriller. You follow the life of a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who is being held against her will by a man (John Goodman) in an underground bunker. Apparently, the world around them is not inhabitable anymore after the original attack on New York. During the movie she tries to escape the underground bunker. This one is full of thrills and chills to delight anyone who loves a good psychological thriller.

Cloverfield in Space

If you paid attention to the new Cloverfield trailer during the Superbowl trailer, you probably noticed that it takes place in space. During the trailer, you see the cast (David Oyelowo, Zhang Ziyi, Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw) on a space station. After the experiment goes wrong on Earth, which apparently makes it disappear. What?! Astronauts are stranded on the space station. That is terrifying.

Cloverfield Paradox happens 10 years after the original attack on New York. The trailer has a good amount of creep with a detached arm moving on its own, a creepy message, and bits of the space station exploding. According to the premise of the movie is as follows:

“In the near future, a group of international astronauts on a space station are working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth. The experimental technology aboard the station has an unexpected result, leaving the team isolated and fighting for their survival.”

The Trailer Premiered During The Game, The Movie, After the Game

And finally, the Trailer as it premiered during the Superbowl:

The last two movies were theatrical releases, yet according to the trailer during the Superbowl, it was to premiere after the game. How does that happen? Normally there is some hype when a new movie is set to come out. Yet this one hasn’t had much of anything till the commercial trailer during Superbowl LII. Netflix dropped the link right after the game ended for all those interested in seeing it. Was it good? Was it bad? I will let you decide. For those who watch reviews before seeing something, here is one YouTube reviewer who saw the movie. Side note, he does a great job to not spoil anything from the movie. So, have you seen The Cloverfield Paradox yet?
