"Imitation of Life" was the director's last melodrama. It's a complex film with a lot of subplots and emotions, including ambition, friendship, and love. Its best subplot is a study of the divisions in American society and its role in shaping the lives of both women. The movie also stars Susan Kohner, who gives an impressive performance as a young, outcast girl.
